ABOUT THE COURSE

This is a one-year intensive course offering secondary school leavers a second chance to improve their GCSE results to gain the entry requirements to progress onto one of our vocational courses or on to an A Level programme at our Sixth Form Centre.

A Grade 4 or higher in GCSE English, Maths and Science is a requirement for many higher education courses and careers. Lessons will combine theory lectures and practical sessions, many of which will take place in our specialist science laboratories.

This course is delivered at the Centre for Applied Sciences.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

  • GCSE Combined Science (equivalent to 2 GCSEs)
  • GCSE Maths
  • GCSE English Language
  • GCSE English Literature

WHAT WILL I NEED?

You will need:

  • To be aged 16-18
  • 5 x GCSEs at Grade 3 or above including Maths, English and Science

Students usually require an internal assessment to determine their suitability for the course.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

The Combined Science GCSE is equivalent to two GCSEs, graded using the linear 9-1 system, with examinations in June.

If you will be aged 16, 17 or 18 on 31st August prior to the start date of your course and you have the legal right to remain in the UK for the duration of your programme then your study with us will be free. Please see here for the documents you will need to show us.

WHAT CAN I DO AFTER?

Students will have the choice to progress into A levels, T Levels or a vocational subject at Level 3.

MEET SOME OF THE TEACHERS

Emma Wong

Emma Wong has worked at City and Islington College for 10+ years motivating and inspiring young adults for a successful future in the world of Science. A biology specialist, Emma has developed students’ knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals behind human biology, exploring the building blocks from genetics to biochemistry. Emma currently is the Curriculum Manager, managing the delivery of vocational courses within the Medical Academy.

Prior to teaching, Emma was a research scientist and participated in several post-doctoral research projects as part of University College London Medical School at The Royal Free Hospital investigating mitochondrial toxicity of HIV drugs and the potential of Parkinson’s Disease treatments using cell culture and bioassay techniques. Emma strongly believes that hands-on laboratory experiences are crucial in supporting learners in their theoretical learning.


Daniella Plummer

Daniella Plummer is an experienced educator with a strong background in teaching and a passion for the sciences. Joining City and Islington College in 2022, She began her teaching career at West Herts College, where she soon progressed to become a manager of science at Harrow College.

Daniella holds a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Molecular Biology and Genetics from the University of Hertfordshire, providing her with a solid academic foundation in the sciences. Her expertise in molecular biology and genetics enables her to offer a comprehensive understanding of these subjects, which she effectively imparts to her students.

With her extensive experience teaching biology, chemistry, and physics, Daniella has successfully guided students from GCSE to A Level, as well as adults pursuing access courses. Her ability to engage students with her enthusiastic and innovative teaching methods has resulted in outstanding academic achievements. As the Curriculum Manager for the Applied Science Department, Daniella brings her exceptional organisational and leadership skills to the role. She ensures that the department's programs are well-structured, innovative, and aligned with the latest educational standards.
