CELTA - Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults

CELTA - the Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults - focuses on teaching and learning strategies for EFL/ESOL and is mainly practical. In addition to your taught sessions, you will need to allow extra time for independent study, assignments and lesson preparation.

We offer the course in various modes to suit your circumstances - part-time or full-time, evening or day. Our teaching staff are qualified - at least to Diploma and/or MA in Linguistics - and highly experienced, with many years of teaching and training expertise.

Our teachers are currently planning for the safest ways to deliver this course for January 2021. We have been delivering all of our courses online since the outbreak of Coronavirus in March 2020, and we are fully equipped to continue this for as long as is necessary. 

We are planning to deliver the course in a mixed format - blending online lessons with face-to-face teaching – as and when we feel that, on the basis of Government advice and our own risk assessments, it is safe to do so. We’ll continue to review our plans and keep you updated on changes as your course progresses.

For this course, our plans for a flexible, mixed format mean that:

• Theory sessions will be delivered through a mix of online and onsite sessions - all led by our expert tutors. If onsite, the sessions will be delivered according to the most up-to-date guidelines for safe classroom delivery
• Teaching practice will be delivered onsite with real teaching practice groups. However, you will be equipped with online teaching skills so we can move this element of the course online if necessary
• Group work will continue in online form, allowing you to collaborate with your peers, support each other and produce work together using relevant digital platforms
• Tutorials and one-to-ones will be delivered online, providing you with a high level of support and the opportunity to work with your tutor
• You will have access to relevant library services and the digital resources and platforms you need to participate successfully in your course
• Direct access to a range of support systems will also be available to help you with any personal difficulties

Topics covered can include:

• Learners and teachers and the teaching and learning context
• Language analysis and awareness
• Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing
• Planning and resources for different teaching contexts
• Developing teaching skills and professionalism

You will need to be:

• aged 18 or over
• a proficient English language user (between CEFR Level C1 and C2 or above)
• educated to the standard required for entry into higher education

All applicants must have an interview and assessment to confirm that the course is suitable for them.

CELTA is assessed through written and assignments and practical teaching. There are four written assignments (each 750–1,000 words), which focus on:

• analysing and responding to adult learner needs
• analysing language for teaching purposes
• teaching language skills
• reflecting on classroom teaching

Your teaching practice will also be assessed, over a total of 6 hours, working with adult classes at a minimum of two levels of ability. Assessment is based on your overall performance.
